The Phantom Of The Opera - Nightwish

Hi Everybody!! Sometime ago I tried to upload this video but since it had the wrong format, I couldn't... Then I forgot... hehe. Now, Alice remind me to upload it and here I am! This video contains flashes from the movie and the song is performed by Nightwish, one of my favourite bands. I forgot there was a movie... a recent movie about the phantom of the opera... The actress is the same from "The day after tomorrow" (I don't know if this is the original name but is the translation from the Spanish)... She is very gorgeous! Well, I hope you like it... See ya!

SPECULATIONS

Well, let's see how well you have learned modals for speculation (both in the present and the past).
I would like you to watch this voicethread and leave a comment for each picture. Listen to my instructions carefully. You are not expected to describe but to speculate using modals in the present and in the past.
If you have a mike, record your comment. If you don't, you can type it. The interesting thing about voicethread is that you can record your comments several times until you are happy with your production and decide to save it.

MODULE 5B - DISCOVERY

As it seems we will be missing five days of classes altogether, it will be your responsibility to complete the exercises on pages 75, 76, 77 and 78 on your own.

Then correct them with the key. (Click on the link)

If there's something you don't understand, of course you can ask me when we resume classes. But we won't be doing all the exercises in class.

Sorry about this but it's the only way we don't fall too much behind with the exam preparation.

The Phantom of the Opera

Well, this is a good time to catch up on your reading of the Phantom. Remember you are supposed to have read the introduction and chapters 1, 2 and 3.

The last time we were together we had time to discuss chapter 1 and correct exercise one in the photocopy. Now I would like you to do exercises 2 and 3 and email them to me.

And I would also like you to answer these questions in the comments area below. I don't want you to email this to me, this will be a kind of forum. Each of you will have to contribute your fair share to the class's understanding of the story.
1- Discuss the effect these people had on Christine's early life:
  • Monsieur Daaé
  • Monsier Valérius
  • Madame Valérius
  • Raoul Chagny
2- What does the historian find strange about these things in the story?
  • the rope
  • Christine Daaé's divine voice
  • the ghost at the supper table
3- Discuss the importance to the story of the Angel of Music.

4- What does the phantom look like according to the people who have seen him? (Quote the characters' exact words.)

A comic relief

Watch this scene from the film The Pink Panther where Inspector Clouseau is trying to acquire a good English pronunciation. It's hilarious.

Have you ever felt like Inspector Clouseau?
Now let's get down to more serious business: how to improve your pronunciation. You are going to watch a video about thought groups. It's a bit long but I have included it because I think it will help you improve your reading aloud. Watch it and do the quiz.

NETIQUETTE

I'm sure you enjoy chatting and surfing the net but are you a good cyber citizen?
Are there any rules to follow in cyberspace?

Take Betty's quiz to test your netiquette know-how.

What's your opinion of these rules? Are they sensible? Do you follow them? Have you ever broken any of them? Share your opinion with your classmates. Remember you can click on comments and write yours there.

WHY ARE BLOGS SUCH A BIG DEAL?

Watch this video and find out.

Now why don't you share with us your experience with blogs, photologs or the like?
Click on comments and start blogging.

THIS IS IT!

Well, remember I promised to open a blog for the class quite a while ago. Well, let's make the most of this recess (which is not a holiday).

Where there's a will, there's a way. Got it?
There are so many things you can do to go on learning and practising English. Let me remind you of a few:
- Do the exercises you haven't done yet in the Student's Resource book (for the units we have already worked with, of course). You can even practise listening comprehension.
- Work with the CD Rom. There are extensive grammar, vocabulary and exam practice activities.
- Browse our virtual classroom. In the categories Sites and Files there are many activities you can already do (listening and grammar practice mainly).

And last but not least, now this blog. I will be publishing everything here from now on. So keep visiting it because there will be some activities that you will have to do here and some that you will have to send me by mail.
I hope you will enjoy working with this new tool.
